Swirl is a wine app for iOS and Android that scans wine labels, learns your personal taste, and recommends bottles matched to your palate rather than to a crowd average. It is free to download.

Swirl is free to download on iOS and Android. Full access runs on an annual subscription of roughly 30 to 40 euros a year, depending on your region. As a launch offer, new users currently get their first year free by claiming it in the app.

You set a baseline with a short taste questionnaire when you sign up, then every wine you rate refines your profile. The more wines you rate, the more precise it gets, and ratings for wines you disliked are just as valuable as ratings for wines you loved. Only wines you rate affect your recommendations - scanning a wine or saving it to a collection does not.

Vivino shows an average rating from a large crowd. Swirl builds a model of your individual taste and recommends against that, and keeps your ratings private rather than posting them to a public feed. The wine information also comes from a different place: Vivino's is largely crowdsourced by its users, while Swirl's comes from producer spec sheets, which is more reliable.

Yes. Swirl is built for every level, and as a beginner you do not need to know grapes, regions or vintages. Scan a bottle, say whether you liked it, and the recommendations improve from there.

Yes. Scan a bottle or search the wine by name, and Swirl tells you what it is and whether it fits your taste before you order. There is no wine list scanner yet - that one is coming.

No. Your ratings and tasting notes are private by default. They are used to improve your own recommendations, not published to a public feed.

The Swirl catalogue holds over 10,000 wines with producer, region, grape, vintage and tasting information, and it grows continuously. If a wine you search for is not there yet, give it a couple of minutes and our system goes and finds the information for you. That information is sourced, not generated by AI.

Swirl needs text to identify a label, so bottles with very little text on the front can fail. You can photograph the back label at the next step instead, or enter the wine manually by name and producer. Either route gives you the same information and recommendations.

No. Every wine's details come from the producer's own spec sheet, so what you read is sourced fact rather than generated text. Recommendations work differently: they run on a system Swirl's own team built, trained sommeliers working alongside robotics engineers, which learns from the wines you rate. No wine description in Swirl is written by a chatbot.
